If you successfully complete your CBT at the age of 16 and you want to upgrade, you can get an a 50cc-limited bike at 17. After 19 you are able to move onto an A1 licence that allows you to ride a 125cc bike without plates or L plates and to carry the passenger.
The A2 is the next step. You can either upgrade from an A1 or take a direct access theory and practical test.
A1 Licence
The open road, the breeze in your hair, the thrill of riding a motorbike. It's a wonderful sensation, but you need first get your A1 license.
The A1 license is the earliest rung on the bike licensing ladder. It allows you to ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc with the power output of up to 11kW. It's available starting at the age of 17, and is a great choice for those who want to begin their motorbike journey in an easy way.
For an A1 license to be granted, you must complete the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) and take a theory test as well as an exam that is two-parts. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training, and helps prepare for the practical and theory tests. For your A1 test, you will be accompanied by an instructor who is certified in motorcycles. The test will last around 20 minutes and will comprise modules 1 and 2. The remainder of the test is conducted on the roads and will test your ability to manage a motorbike while at speed.

You will also be required to show your ability to ride at a low speed and do slow control exercises like turning left, riding up and down hills, and U-turns.
After passing your A1 licence you can upgrade to an A2 license after passing your CBT Theory, and Practical Tests. You can now ride any A2 category motorcycle and carry passengers.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence represents the second step to obtaining a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is a restricted one and can only be obtained by those aged 19 or over and possessing an active CBT. The A2 licence permits you to ride motorcycles that have a maximum power of 47 BHP. However, motorcycles with more power are only permitted to 94 BHP.
If you choose to take the A2 route to take, then you must be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 in your motorcycle test. Both tests are performed on a motorcycle that qualifies for A2 eligibility, and both modules can be booked through the same place as your CBT course as well as the theory test. The A2 route is ideal for riders who have completed their CBT course quickly and are able financially and terms of experience, to upgrade to a bigger motorcycle.
The first module of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor session where you will be taught how to control your bike, including emergency stops and slow speed maneuvering. Then, you'll be taking the on-road section of the test, where you will be expected to demonstrate hazard avoidance exercises as well as road positioning. You must also perform lifesaver checks and keep an interval of two seconds between you and the vehicle ahead of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make up to a total of 10 faults. This includes not using your mirrors or failing to maintain the proper distance.
If you pass both the modules of your A2 motorcycle test, you'll be able to ride any motorcycle that falls in the A2 category. This includes the well-known Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-07 models. While they aren't particularly powerful but they are capable of navigating the speed limits and offer the ride that is comfortable and enjoyable.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence allows riders to upgrade to larger bikes that have more power. The A2 Licence has additional advantages that you can't enjoy with the CBT. For instance you can use motorways and transport passengers. You can move from CBT to A2 by completing additional training and passing the relevant tests. The A2 licence is valid for two years and may be upgraded to a full, unrestricted A licence after another two years.
The first step in obtaining your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and the Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you are able to take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 exam will test your riding abilities in a closed-circuit. the module 2 test requires manoeuvres in an open road.
During the A2 practical test, you must be able to demonstrate good ability to observe and anticipate hazards on the road. You must also be able to utilize the correct road positioning and execute controlled maneuvers. You must be able, for instance, to make a U turn or figure eight. You must be able to manage the bike in slow-speed conditions like turning at junctions and reacting to traffic signals.
Once you have passed your A2 test, you can start working towards the full A licence. This can be achieved through the progressive access route or taking a direct entry exam. To be able to take direct entry you must pass the theory test, and then pass the mod 1 and module 2 practice tests on a bike that has at minimum 54bhp.
The A1 and A2 licences differ from the rest of UK motorbike licences because they are restricted based on power-to-weight ratios rather than engine cc. Even bikes with 600cc capacity can be A2 compliant if they are equipped with restrictor kits. It's important to know that not all bikes that claim to be A2 compliant are A2 compliant. A4 Licence
